Preparing university students for a global world
Pekanbaru » The large number of English courses available in Indonesia are no guarantee that local people, especially students, will be able to communicate well using English. They need a forum in which to develop their ability to speak the language.
To meet this need in Pekanbaru, Riau, YPP formed the English Zone, a community of people who want to improve their English.
The English Zone comprises several programs, including discussion groups led by native speakers of English; discussion groups led by members; pronunciation labs with focused drills; and special monthly programs. These activities all have the goal of growing the self confidence of each member in speaking English.
Members who lead regular discussions and discussions for beginners have the opportunity to grow in leadership skills as they improve their own ability to speak English. Those who have completed their discussion group leadership task are presented with a certificate.
A resource centre also has a lending library with more than 3500 books as well as a wide range of sports equipment, games, media resources and Wi-Fi internet access to support students’ community life and learning. Through the English Zone members can also share their knowledge of study and travel abroad.
Since 2008, The English Zone has welcomed 700 high school and university students into membership. Each day, some 25-30 members participate in activities at the English Zone centre.
