Help and encouragement for underprivileged students

Jakarta » Higher academic expectations and a heavier work load are increasingly challenging for Indonesian students. The answer for well-to-do parents is to put their kids in extra lessons after school. But parents without means don’t have the same opportunity to help their children succeed and continue with their education.

The YPP Community Centre provides this opportunity in Kalianyar, West Jakarta by offering after school lessons for students of poor families.

The ability to learn on their own gives students the opportunity to use the method of study they most enjoy; to advance at their own speed with their direct involvement; to discover their personal abilities; and to develop their talents using the multiple intelligences at their disposal. Thus YPP recognizes the importance of coming alongside students to help them learn for themselves.

Homework Club activities are provided for children 6-12 using a mentoring system that helps them discover answers to their homework assignments on their own. The learning system is based on recognition of the child’s love language (a term psychologists use to describe various modes of communication to which different types of children are most responsive), and this makes learning more effective for children with learning difficulties.

The mentoring provided by YPP staff is focused on giving encouragement and motivating the children so that they believe in their own ability to learn. Rather than dictating, teachers communicate with students using a personal approach that fits with each child’s love language.
